A leading pro-100 voice breaks it down in this week’s Inside Tucson Business.

Opinion : It%u2019s your choice: Pay more taxes for schools or jails? – Inside Tucson Business – newspaper, business news, opinion, classifieds

…if Proposition 100 fails we will in effect be putting up a “Closed for
Business” sign because no company is going to relocate to a state that
can’t provide an educated workforce or quality schools for employees to
send their children.

Up to 64 Stands!!!!

Wow! In a little over a week we have gone from 0 to 56 stands registered and more coming all the time! We have over 600 people following this on Facebook, and all of you are invested in getting the word out – YES on 100. Thanks for being a part of this.

Some questions have come up, so here are our FAQs

1. Where can I have my stand?

Anywhere you want. On your block. In a park. Wherever you think people will be thirsty on Saturday. If it’s a safe place where people will be or can safely stop to pick up a drink, it’s a good location for a lemonade stand. Of course, you may need to get permission to be in some places.

Here are some ideas:

  • Anywhere along the Rillito River Park
  • Ask your neighborhood fire station if you can set up there. Fire fighters are strong endorsers of Prop 100. Private firehouses (Rural Metro), may be more willing to let you run a stand.
  • Your local park
  • Softball or little league games
  • Ask your favorite small business. The Tucson Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce have endorsed Prop 100. There is strong business support for this measure. Of course, there is real debate over Prop 100, and some businesses may not want to inject themselves into the discussion. But it’s worth asking.
  • Local Hospitals. Tucson Medical Center will have a stand in the Children’s Emergency Room waiting area.
  • If you have a great idea, let us know! We’ll pass it on to someone looking for a location.

2. Do I have to charge for lemonade?

Nope. It’s your stand. You can run it however you wish. Figure out what works best for you and have fun.

3. Can I offer something besides lemonade?

Sure. Some folks are selling brownies and cookies along with their lemonade. We have heard that some are selling agua fresca and horchata. Again, it’s your stand.

4. What do I do with the money from sales and donations?

Donate it to the school of your choice.

5. What if I have other questions?

Send us an email at I-Want-To-Help@100StandsForEducation.org

6. What if I have friends who have not registered yet?

Send them to www.100StandsForEducation.org to learn more and to sign up!

Thanks.

Proposition 100′s impact on public safety, Arizona’s businesses and jobs is weighed

Proposition 100′s impact on public safety, Arizona’s businesses and jobs is weighed

A temporary revenue source is a must for our state because core government responsibilities like public safety must be funded adequately. Otherwise, the state would be forced to deal with 2010 crimes, 2010 prison counts at 2004-era funding levels.

If Proposition 100 fails, DPS is expecting another $10.9 million cut from our 2011 budget, which will likely result in the layoffs of hundreds of officers and support staff members.

The significant consequence of further cuts to DPS will more than likely be slower response times for Highway Patrol officers and other enforcement units. What this ultimately means is serious long-term damage to Arizona’s communities, neighborhoods, schools and other services. As a father of two, and a police officer, I cannot let that happen.

No Arizona citizen wants to be taxed more than we already are in these economic times. Families, like mine, have had to make changes in order to deal with our fiscal downturn.

By supporting Proposition 100, you are helping to secure the safety and security of Arizona citizens in the future with a temporary solution.

It is not just education that will be impacted if Prop 100 fails in Arizona, our safety will be impacted as well.

Marana, MUSD officials talk budgets

Marana, MUSD officials talk budgets

The district put into place a series of money-saving strategies for the current fiscal year – which ends June 30 – and more recently began slicing away to meet a projected $5.6 million deficit for next year, Wilson said.
Then it got word that school districts should come up with a contingency budget to put into place if Proposition 100 – which would increase sales tax by 1 percent for the next three years – doesn’t pass. The public will vote on the measure May 18.
So instead of working on a $5.6 million shortfall, the Marana district planned for a $10.3 million shortage.
That added up to a reduction in force – eliminated positions – of 185, plus 42.5 full-time-equivalent positions lost due to attrition, he said.

Arizona to reapply for federal education grant

Arizona to reapply for federal education grant

Despite an embarrassing review of its first application, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will announce today that the state again will compete for a piece of the $4 billion Race to the Top federal grant. It is the largest competitive education grant ever offered and the state’s cut could be as much as $250 million.

But it’s a long shot.

Out of 40 states plus the District of Columbia that applied in the first round of competition, Arizona’s application ranked 40th. Only South Dakota posted a worse score.

Looking for outward assistance is not going to solve Arizona’s education woes, we need to take a Stand and be counted as members of the state that EDUCATION MATTERS

Sales-tax question tests voters’ mood

Sales-tax question tests voters’ mood

The Republic traversed the state to capture its mood as the election nears.

From Arizona’s northernmost end to its southern border, a tax increase is a tough sell. But opposition softens when voters are reminded that it is tied to education.

Business owners worry that the increase may dampen sales while several shoppers said a few pennies more won’t make a noticeable dent in their budgets.

some word from up the road in Phoenix, this article has a lot of reasons that people are giving both in support and against prop 100, good read to prep oneself for conversations…

Pro: Hospitals, not only schools and police, would benefit from increase

Pro: Hospitals, not only schools and police, would benefit from increase

If voters reject Prop. 100, our physicians, hospitals and other health-care professionals will be subject to an additional 10 percent cut in payments for care they provide to patients enrolled in our state’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). As a result, hospitals and other caregivers will lose $342 million per year in state and federal matching funds. Without these revenues, hospitals will face tough choices. They may be forced to cut back on services to their communities and eliminate jobs – decisions that not only harm health care, but take our economy in the wrong direction.

It is not just schools that will be impacted, and the loss of federal matching funds to both schools and care givers will be devastating.
